نسبت صحيفة نيويورك تايمز لمسؤولين يمنيين ودبلوماسيين غربيين قولهم إن حكومة الرئيس اليمني علي عبد الله صالح تعج بأعضاء عائلته وإنه يسعى لضمان أن يخلفه ابنه أحمد في رئاسة اليمن, وأشارت إلى أن واشنطن تواجه إذا زعيما يضع عائلته في قمة أولوياته.
الصحيفة قالت إن الولايات المتحدة الأميركية سرعت من وتيرة تقديم مساعداتها لليمن وكثفت من تعاونها معه بوصفه جبهة جديدة قديمة لمواجهة تنظيم القاعدة.
غير أنها نقلت عن مسؤولين يمنيين ومحللين ودبلوماسيين غربيين قولهم إن أحد أكثر الأمور حساسية بالنسبة لواشنطن يتمثل في كيفية التعامل مع صالح الذي ولى كثيرا من أعضاء عائلته حقائب في حكومته والذي يسعى لضمان أن يكون خليفته هو ابنه أحمد.
ويقول المحللون إن صالح, المعروف بدهائه, قضى جل وقته خلال العامين الماضيين في السعي لترسيخ حكم عائلته بدلا من التركيز على معالجة المطالب المعقدة لقبائل وأقاليم اليمن الهش.
ورغم أن ما يواجهه اليمن من خطر القاعدة يجعله أهلا للحصول على الدعم الأميركي, فإن بيروقراطية رئيسه الفاسدة والعاجزة تجعل قدرته على التأثير على مجريات الأحداث ضئيلا, بل إن الشكوك تحوم حول مدى استعداد الرئيس اليمني للتصدي للقاعدة, التي لا ينظر إليها بوصفها عدوه الأول, فهو يواجه العديد من بؤر التوتر في آن واحد.
وفي المحافظات التي توجد بها حقول النفط اليمنية الأساسية, فإن القوات الحكومية والشرطة يلزمون ثكناتهم أو ينتشرون في مراكز المدن أما النظام خارج المدن فيتولاه زعماء القبائل.
يقول المحلل السياسي اليمني مراد ظافر "لا يمكنك أن ترى أي شخص يرتدي زيا حكوميا في محافظة أبين", مضيفا أن "مناطق شاسعة من اليمن ليس بها كهرباء ولا ماء ولا سلطة مركزية".
ويؤكد الدبلوماسيون أن صالح لم يقرر مواجهة القاعدة إلا بعد أن أقنعته واشنطن أن هذا التنظيم يخص أعضاء عائلته بالاستهداف, عندها بدأ يأخذ خطورة تهديده مأخذ الجد.
