ذُكر أن الشافعي رحمه الله تناظر يوماً مع أحد العلماء حول مسألة فقهية عويصة .. فاختلفا .. وطال الحوار .. حتى علت أصواتهما .. ولم يستطع أحدهما أن يقنع صاحبه .. وكأن الرجل تغير وغضب .. ووجد في نفسه .. فلما انتهى المجلس وتوجها للخروج ..
التفت الشافعي إلى صاحبه .. وأخذ بيده وقال : ألا يصح أن نختلف ونبقى إخواناً ..! وجلس بعض علماء الحديث يوماً .. عند الخليفة .. فتكلم رجل في المجلس بحديث .. فاستغرب العالم منه .. وقال : ما هذا الحديث !! من أين جئت به ؟ تكذب على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ؟ فقال الرجل : بل هذا حديث .. ثابت .. قال العالم : لا .. هذا حديث لم نسمع به .. ولم نحفظه .. وكان في المجلس وزير عاقل .. فالتفت إلى العالم وقال بهدوء : يا شيخ .. هل حفظت جمييييع أحاديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ..؟ قال : لا .. قال : فهل حفظت نصفها ؟ قال : ربما .. فقال : فاعتبر هذا الحديث من النصف الذي لم تحفظه .. وانتهت المشكلة ..
